This afternoon I had the pleasure of sharing my story with members of the Fox Valley Therapy Dog Club and give them some food for thought regarding interacting with and understanding persons with disabilities. For some, it may be difficult to know what to say or even do when they encounter someone with a disability. As I learned earlier this week, those of us within the disabled community may have different viewpoints about words (i.e. handicapped, crippled, etc.) some able-bodied individuals use when talking about persons with disabilities. If you hire me to speak on the topic of disability etiquette and education, you'll see that I approach this topic with humor and honesty. For me, this topic is more about the "golden rule" and less about political correctness.

I recently had the opportunity to hear Amy speak at our club meeting. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to her presentation. She has an incredible story as well as an awe-inspiring attitude. She has such a positive outlook on everything and faces any challenge presented with this same attitute. She is truly a blessing!

I agree with Lyn's comments. Amy speaks with enthusiasm, knowledge, great respect and humor. At times, I was almost drawn to tears and other times, found myself laughing out loud. What an entertaining speaker, so inspiring! Hearing her story and learning about disability etiquette in this way was very enjoyable. I'm telling all my friends about her. If you have not had the chance to hear this amazing woman speak, talk to your church, your school, your employer...you will walk away smiling!
